The AJDSS welcomes submissions considering future and contemporary concerns relevant to the defence and strategic outlook of Australia and the Indo-Pacific region.

The AJDSS also invites proposals from organisations conducting workshops, symposiums or conferences to submit a series of themed papers for our Focus section or a potential special issue.
When submitting to the AJDSS please include the following.
Academic articles undergo a double-blind peer review process. This process can be lengthy (up to 12 weeks); and reviews may recommend revision and resubmission. Please see the Editorial Policies for further details on the peer review process.
Submissions of commentary, reviews and correspondence are assessed by the editorial office and editorial review board; every effort is made to provide responses within 8 to 12 weeks from submission.
Book reviews should include the full title, author, publisher, year of publication and ISBN details of the work being reviewed. If submitting an unsolicited book review please provide a cover image of the title.
In general, please write for a sophisticated general audience using plain English. Try to avoid management speak, military jargon and excessive acronyms. It is also better to not assume knowledge of specialised subject matter or technology.

AJDSS prefers authors to cite references with sequential superscript Arabic numerals with full details of the source in footnotes at the bottom of the page following the Documentary-note style as outlined in the Australian Government Style Manual, noting the following preferences:

As a general guide:
Please do not use in-text author-date references in parenthesises.
Bibliographies are not necessary.
List Digital Object Identifiers (doi) if applicable.
Authors are asked to include a brief biography outlining professional position titles, associations and expertise. An accompanying photograph of the author/s may also be submitted.
When submitting your manuscript list all tables, figures, charts, maps, graphics, illustrations or photographs on the title page and send items separately in high resolution original format ( pdf, tiff, png or jpeg files). Inserted files within a Word document are not sufficient.
Authors are responsible for ensuring they have appropriate copyright permission to use third-party materials (such as images, tables etc) and must be able to provide evidence of the permissions given. All supplementary material should be of sufficient quality to be replicable to publication standard. Tables, diagrams, charts etc. should be at finished size (i.e. not enlarged) and 600 dpi or higher.
Photographs must be of at least 300 dpi and at finished size resolution.
Authors should indicate in parenthesis where in the text they wish supplementary material to appear, along with the accompanying headings or text. However, the layout designer and editorial office decide on the final placement and size of tables and graphics.
Tables, figures, charts, maps, graphics and illustrations should be clear, relevant and comprehensible without reference to the text. Avoid unnecessary complexity in colour, shading and linework that may not reproduce well, particularly avoid layering text with shaded or coloured sections.
AJDSS generally commissions reviews, however unsolicited reviews will be considered. Authors interested in writing a review of a particular work should contact the editorial office via email prior to submission. Reviews can include books, podcasts, films or documentaries or other scholarly resources.
Reviews should be original, current, engaging and contribute thoughtfully to the understanding, interests and concerns of AJDSS readers. They should be well reasoned, contextual and evidenced through appropriate examples from the material under review.
Reviews should be between 1,000 and 2,000 words and follow the same formatting guidelines as other submissions. Review essays that compare and contrast multiple works may be longer and should be discussed with the managing editor prior to submission.
Reviews, as with other submissions, should express ideas clearly and in a logical manner, use plain English and conform to Australian spelling conventions. Do not assume the reader has prior knowledge and expertise in the subject matter or understands technical jargon, abbreviations or the terminology of specialist fields.
