Jack Gregg - Local scientists analyse warfare for the Australian Defence ForceFor Lieutenant Colonel Jack Gregg, a life of active service has provided him with the opportunity to analyse Australia’s military operations, making places like Afghanistan safer and more efficient for Australia’s fighting soldiers.
LTCOL Gregg joined the Australian Army in 1973, graduating as an Infantry Officer in 1976 from Duntroon. He is currently on deployment in the Middle East, but normally works at Defence Science and Technology in Edinburgh, South Australia, where he trains and deploys scientists into Australia’s operational environments. This allows the Australian Defence Force to properly measure its effectiveness and make decisions on how it runs military operations.
“The introduction of scientists right at the coal face of the battle is an exciting development in the way we conduct operations. I am proud to be part of a great team of Aussies.” LTCOL Gregg said.
LTCOL Gregg’s extensive operational experience makes him well equipped to lead Australia’s operational analysis team in the Middle East. This is his sixth operational deployment with the Australian Defence Force, having served in Malaysia, Bougainville, Timor, the Solomon’s, Iraq and previously in Afghanistan. He has also been very fortunate to receive postings to Germany, London and the United States during his career.
LTCOL Gregg is a Tanunda man. He is looking forward to getting back to his very supportive wife Lesley and daughter Alexandra, planting spring vegetables and having a beer at the Tanunda Club with Jack and the team.
“While I am away, Lesley runs our Bed and Breakfast/Vineyards at Lawley Farm. She is a huge support to me, but looking forward to my return home in September,” he said.
Australia's military contribution to Afghanistan is part of the nation’s broader commitment to Coalition efforts against international terrorism, countering piracy in the Gulf of Aden, and maritime security. The Australian deployment, comprising around 1550 personnel in Afghanistan and a further 850 across the Middle East, is know as Operation SLIPPER.
Under Operation SLIPPER, Australian forces contribute to the efforts of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) - led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, aimed at preventing Afghanistan again becoming a safe haven for international terrorists and the United States-led International Coalition Against Terrorism
