Daniel Berrel - Short Leave for Local Sailor
After the Australian Guided Missile Frigate HMAS Newcastle finished its open day in Brisbane last Saturday it gave Tin Can Bay’s Daniel Berrel the chance to catch up with his family and friends back home.
An avid dinghy sailor with the Tin Can Bay Sea Scouts, Dan joined the Navy and specialised as a Combat System Operator. Now promoted to Leading Seaman he has now been in the Navy for nine years.
In that time Dan has been on several deployments to South East Asia, North Asia and the Arabian Gulf serving on HMA Ships Sydney, Melbourne, Tobruk and now Newcastle.
On board, Daniel is responsible for the operation of the highly sophisticated sensor suite onboard Newcastle which includes the ship’s radar and sonar systems.
When asked what he enjoys most about being in the Navy, Daniel was quick to respond, “Overseas deployments and making so many friends”.
HMAS Newcastle visited Brisbane from Friday 16 until Monday 19 October in support of Brisbane Navy Week.
