Levi Grima - Mackay soldier protects Baghdad DiplomatsThere are now only 80 Australian soldiers left in Iraq, and Mackay’s Levi Grima, 20, is one of them.
The former Mackay State High School student and local Woolworths butcher is now serving with the Australian Army’s Security Detachment whose job is protecting Australian diplomats in Baghdad.
A keen outdoorsman, Trooper Grima, 20, is a member of the Australian Security Detachment which provides close personal protection to the diplomats at Australian Embassy and as they move around the troubled city.
Trooper Grima has specialised as a gunner on the Australian Light Armoured Vehicles and he’s normally based in Darwin with 2nd Cavalry Regiment, but now he is in Baghdad for an eight-month tour of duty.
Trooper Grima is the son of Felix Grima and Linda Kelly of Mackay.
The Security Detachment is deployed as part of Operation KRUGER - the Australian Defence Force’s ongoing contribution to the provision of security and support for the Australian embassy and its staff in Iraq.
Working in support of the Australian Embassy and its staff in Iraq, the ADF provides a tailored security detail in order to facilitate protected mobility to the Head of the diplomatic mission and his staff.
The Australian Security Detachment, known as SECDET, is comprised of about 80 personnel drawn from infantry, cavalry, military police and combat service support units. SECDET currently consists mainly of personnel from the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (Townsville) and the 2nd Cavalry Regiment (Darwin).
