Radio Man To The Rescue - Jiri Lipovsky
Local man Jiri Lipovsky joined the Navy six years ago and he’s already visited half a dozen countries, but his current mission is affecting more lives than all the rest put together.
Jiri is now part of Operation Padang Assist, Australia’s military response to the devastating earthquake that smashed into West Sumatra on 30 September.
Now promoted to Leading Seaman, Jiri is aboard HMAS Kanimbla where his job is keeping the communications open from ship to shore and back again.
Kanimbla is one of the Navy’s two amphibious support ships and she sailed to Sumatra packed with emergency teams and relief supplies.
Electronics Technician sailors in the RAN have the option of specialising in either communications, systems or weapons.
“As an electronics technician communications sailor, I am involved in monitoring and maintaining the ship’s communications systems,” Jiri said.
“This ranges from high frequency transmitters and receivers to satellite systems – all of which are vital in the ship’s communications capabilities.”
“This latest deployment is shaping up to be the most rewarding so far,” Jiri said. “It’s good to be able to help people who are obviously desperately in need of assistance.”
