Shawn Haase - Lake Cargelligo Airman plays key role in RAAF Middle East missionLeading Aircraftman Shawn Haase (25) from Lake Cargelligo is playing a vital role serving with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), deployed in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).
Shawn is working as an Aircraft Structural Fitter on the RAAF’s AP-3C Orion surveillance aircraft.
“I joined the Air Force in 2005 because I thought it was a secure job and a good opportunity to travel and see Australia and the world,” Shawn said.
The AP-3C Orions are deployed in the Middle East to provide aerial surveillance over both the Arabian Gulf and Afghanistan in support of the Australian Government’s commitment to the International Coalition Against Terrorism.
“My job involves maintaining and repairing the aircraft structure, including structural ribs and aircraft skins,” Shawn said.
“When I fix damage on any aircraft and then watch it fly off again it is so satisfying.”
Back at home, Shawn has a wife and a young daughter who he is looking forward to seeing when he returns home.
"My wife's name is Cassandra and my four-month-old daughter is Hayley. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them again in two months time,” Shawn said.
“When I get home, we are planning to go on a holiday to visit my parents, and go on a beach camping trip in New South Wales.
“In my spare time, I will also go water skiing with a mate on the Murray river.”
Shawn and his workmates look forward to returning to Australia from the Middle East Tour of Duty in October as part of Operation SLIPPER.
Operation SLIPPER is Australia's military contribution to Afghanistan. It is part of the nation’s broader commitment to Coalition efforts against international terrorism, countering piracy in the Gulf of Aden, and maritime security.
The Australian deployment comprises of around 1550 personnel in Afghanistan and a further 850 across the Middle East.
Under Operation SLIPPER, Australian forces contribute to the efforts of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) - led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, aimed at preventing Afghanistan again becoming a safe haven for international terrorists, and the United States-led International Coalition Against Terrorism.
