ADF humanitarian mission to Pakistan

An Australian Defence Force medical team has begun deploying as part of the Australian Government's relief assistance to Pakistan following earthquakes on 8 October 2005.

RAAF B-707 and C-130 aircraft departed RAAF Base Richmond, NSW, on 11 November to conduct the initial air lift to a base at Dhanni, about 20km north east of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan.

The deployment will be for up to 90 days as part of Operation Pakistan Assist.

The ADF team will not be armed. Security will be provided by the Pakistan Defence Force because it is a humanitarian mission similar to the assistance provided to Indonesia in Aceh following the Boxing Day 2004 earthquakes and tsunamis.

The ADF team for Operation Pakistan Assist comprises about 140 personnel, including a command element, aviation detachment, logistics and communication personnel.

Four Black Hawk helicopters will be deployed to provide essential transport and support tasks around the remote town of Dhanni.
