Gold Coast Cadet Unit re-opens

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Teresa Gambaro has welcomed the re-opening of Australian Navy Cadet Unit Training Ship Tyalgum (TS Tyalgum) today after concerns were allayed regarding asbestos posing a potential threat to the safety of cadets at the Unit.

A disintegrating asbestos roof at a boat shed adjacent to TS Tyalgum on the Gold Coast was identified as being a possible hazard to cadets in November last year.

The Unit was immediately closed while owners of the boat shed (Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines) undertook an asbestos survey of the site.

The subsequent report was reviewed by Defence and concluded that asbestos at the boat shed posed no threat to cadets.

In addition, Defence conducted asbestos analysis both outside and inside the Unit, which also concluded that asbestos posed no threat to cadets or staff at TS Tyalgum.

"The Senior Naval Officer in Queensland will brief staff, cadets and parents at TS Tyalgum before officially re-opening the Unit, allowing cadets to recommence their usual activities," Ms Gambaro said.

"This is an excellent outcome for the cadets of TS Tyalgum."

Ms Gambaro also understands that the Department of Natural Resources and Mines applied to demolish the boat shed, with a decision expected by April.
