Major General A.G. MELICK AM RFD S.C.
Head Cadet, Reserve and Employer Support Division
Major General Aziz Gregory (Greg) Melick joined
2nd Battalion, the Royal New South Wales Regiment (RNSWR) in 1966 and was promoted to Corporal in 1967.
Moving to Sydney the following year, he transferred to the Sydney University Regiment and then to the 1st Battalion, the Royal New South Wales Regiment (RNSWR) later redesignated
1 Commando Company. He served with 1 Commando Company for ten years being promoted through the ranks with his final posting in that unit as Operations Officer.
From 1977-78 he served, on full time duty, as ADC to His Excellency, Sir Stanley Burbury, the Governor of Tasmania and moved to Tasmania permanently in 1979.
As a Major, he commanded the 40th Independent Rifle Company (Royal Tasmania Regiment) from 1981 until 1983. In 1986 he commenced a further period of full time duty as leader of a multi-national Operation Raleigh Expedition for which he was awarded a CGS Commendation.
Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1987, his postings included Chief Instructor, Regimental Training Wing, 6th Training Group, Staff Officer (Projects) HQ 3rd Division, and Commanding Officer 12th/40th Battalion Royal Tasmania Regiment from 1991 - 1993. As a Colonel, he commanded 6th Training Group from 1993 until 1996.
Major General Melick was a Principal Staff Officer at both HQ 2nd Division and Land Headquarters from 1996-1999. On promotion to Brigadier, he was appointed Deputy Commander, Combined Arms Training Development Centre (CATDC) (now LWDC) in November 2000, and in January 2003, assumed command of the Northern NSW based 8th Brigade.
On 16 January 2006, Major General Melick was appointed as Director General Reserves - Army. He was promoted to Major General 1st July 2007, and is the first Tasmanian Major General since “the Father of Legacy” Sir John Gellibrand who was promoted to command the 3rd Division Australian Imperial Force in May 1918.
On his promotion, Major General Melick assumed the role of Head Reserve and Employer Support Division. On 01 July 2009 Reserve and Employer Support Division and Cadet Policy Branch amalgamated to become Cadet, Employer and Support Division, of which Major General Melick is now Head.
Major General Melick is a Senior Counsel with chambers in Sydney and Hobart and is Cricket Australia's special investigator into cricket corruption. He is a former Statutory Member of the National Crime Authority and the NSW Casino Control Authority.
He resides in Hobart with his wife Michelle, Thomas 19 (a member of 12/40 RTR) and Alexandra, 17. Their eldest son Aziz, is a Tasmanian Police Officer.
Major General Melick has a strong interest in wines. He is a Senior Judge of Wine (SJW) and is a partner in a Tasmanian Vineyard. His other interests include rugby, cricket, books, hunting and diving.
