The Secretary announced a review into Defence as an employer of women. This review was completed by the Deputy Public Service Commissioner, Ms Carmel McGregor, who has reported on the effectiveness of current strategies and proposed recommendations across a range of issues to improve the representation of women in the Department of Defence.

Working under powers delegated to her by the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) and supported by an eminent panel, the Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner Ms Elizabeth Broderick led an independent review of the treatment of women at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), with a focus on the adequacy and appropriateness of measures to promote gender equality, women’s safety, and to address and prevent sexual harassment and abuse, and sex discrimination.
