Alice Jones was appointed First Assistant Secretary, Estate Services in the Department of Defence on 18 April 2016.
Prior to her appointment, Ms Jones was General Manager, Health Programmes Division in the Department of Human Services. In that position, she provided program management and leadership of Medicare and the Pharmaceutical and Veteran Affairs Benefits Scheme, among many other duties. She was responsible for approximately $29 billion of benefits paid, supported by 250 staff. From December 2013 to July 2014, she also managed Medicare Provider Processing, which involved some 1,500 staff located throughout Australia.
A specialist in service delivery, Alice Jones is a driver of change focused on the user experience and increasing efficiencies. She develops and combines people capability, teamwork and program management to achieve government-defined outcomes. Ms Jones has managed highly complex relations between government agencies with overlapping interests during periods of substantial reform.
From November 2010 to December 2013, Ms Jones held positions in the Department of Human Services as General Manager, Business Services Division and National Manager, Older Australians and International Branch. In the latter position, she represented that department in discussions on international social security agreements in Greece, Poland, Norway and Denmark.
Ms Jones held senior positions in ACT Health between July 2007 and November 2010 focusing on patient safety and on coordinating the activities of the ACT Health Minister and the Chief Executive.
Ms Jones is a Registered Nurse and holds qualifications in midwifery and child health, as well as a Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) from Charles Sturt University. She has worked in many nursing roles, including at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London where she was a Specialist Nurse in the High Dependency/Intensive Care Cardiac Ward.
