Childrens' services

The Williamtown Childcare and Preschool are located at 20a Kangaroo Street, Raymond Terrace. The facility at Raymond Terrace includes a new, modern and spacious childcare centre for children six weeks to five years and preschool for children aged three to five years. The playgroup is located at Ferodale Oval in Medowie (opposite Kirrang Drive).

DCO has established an individual case management service which is being offered to all Defence families to help them source alternative childcare options. If you are experiencing difficulties accessing appropriate childcare, call the all-hours Defence Family Helpline on 1800 624 608 or

Newcastle Buddies

Newcastle Buddies is a group for Defence partners and families who reside in the Newcastle area.  The group provides support and can assist you to make new friends.

Defence Special Needs Support Group

The Defence Special Needs Support Group is a non-profit benevolent volunteer organisation established to assist ADF families with a family member with special needs.

Little Diggers Playgroup

Defence Mums, Dads, babies and children of any age welcome! We have weekly indoor activities set up and an outdoor playground. Many toys and things to keep the kids busy while you have the chance to get to know other Defence families.

Bring a $2.00 donation per child (or $4.00 for a family) and a piece of fruit to share.

Terrace Buddies

A support group for Defence partners located in the Raymond Terrace, Medowie and Williamtown areas. Everyone is made to feel welcome in a supportive environment.

Williamtown Child Care Centre

The Defence Childcare centre at Raymond Terrace provides ADF members and their families with Defence priority placement for children 0-6 years old. The service includes daily food and nappies.

Williamtown Pre-School

A not-for-profit organisation, the pre-school is for children 3-5 years old. It is managed by a management committee of ADF parents on a voluntary basis.

Williamtown Playgroup

Parents and carers of children aged 0-5yrs are welcome to socialise and encourage development in a child friendly environment.

Williamtown Defence Family Group Inc

Williamtown Defence Family Group Inc. (WDFG) is a not for profit organisation operated by a volunteer management committee. We undertake projects that support Defence members and their families to connect and integrate in the Williamtown community. From coffee catch ups to making tribute poppies and organising deployment care packages we have a variety of existing activities for you to enjoy. Activities are hosted at both on and off base locations.

Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation

The Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation supports kids living in families affected by mental illness. The program provides recreational educational camps and other activities, giving kids a break, in a fun, positive and safe environment. Kids have the opportunity t meet other kids in similar families and develop new friendships.

Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service

VVCS provides free and confidential, nation-wide counselling and support for war and service-related mental health conditions, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance and anger. 

Bay Region

Buddies in the Bay

A group for Defence and civilian partners who reside in the Nelson Bay region. The group share information, chat and have fun in a friendly atmosphere.

Gan Gan Family Centre

The Gan Gan Family Centre is part of The Schools as Community Centres Project.

Gan Gan Family Centre is located on the grounds of Anna Bay Public School (near the back entrance on Old Main Rd). We aim to provide services to our local community such as playgroups, workshops and information with a focus on children 0-8.

Gan Gan Family Centre provides a range of FREE activities and initiatives to engage and support families raising young children.

Initiatives include:

  • supported playgroups, play & learn groups for children & parents
  • transition to school playgroup & activities
  • parenting workshops & support groups, information & resources
  • toy & book library
  • projects that bring other services into the school & community
